Welcome to Top 5 Wednesday! If you don’t know what this is, Top Five Wednesday was created by Lainey, or Gingerreadslainey. Today’s topic is disappointing eye candy – books that look good, but were bad.
Okay – this may get a tad controversial…
Uprooted by Naomi Novik – Okay, this is a very LOVED or HATED book. I was in the latter category. I never wrote a review because I DNF’d it, but I did write an explanation somewhere in a comment explaining my dislike: romance ick. magic boring.
Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes – STOP. DON’T HATE ME. I did not hate this book, but it was disappointing. I gave it 3 stars, and my review is here. It was very hyped, and I don’t think it lived up to that hype.
The One by Kiera Cass – It wasn’t the best, and the whole premise is some ridiculousness fun. But, if you go in expecting a lot, there will probably be disappointment.
Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi – Book 1, Shatter Me, was okay. This one was also okay. But, Juliette annoys me so much, and it’s also just another book that did not live up to the hype.
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater – This did not work for me. The romance was weird, and I couldn’t really get into the plot. The writing, however, was beautiful, and I loved Raven Boys from Stiefvater’s other series!

I
m so glad i
m not the only one who thought Falling Kingdoms was overly hyped. I read the first book but didn`t get to desire to read more.I finished the Shatter Me series but hated Juliette though the whole thing. I was in a stage where i felt like i had to finish ever series i started

I want to finish the Shatter Me series just so I get some closure, but it’s taking me forever to pick up the last book because of Juliette!

I agree with your thoughts on Falling Kingdoms. I didn’t hate it but I was expecting a lot more from it considering how many people love it. I feel like it just gets better from there so I’m continuing the series next month

I’ve been debating whether or not to continue, and I do own the 2nd and 3rd book. Maybe sometime this year I’ll pick them up. Hopefully the series gets better!

I’m hoping to pick up the second book at some point this month. I really hope it gets better because I kind of want to be a part of that bandwagon haha

I haven’t read any of these books on your list disappointing eye candy, but I have heard mixed things about Shiver. People either love it or just couldn’t get into it.

I agree. Some of the books on this list are very well loved, so I recommend giving them a chance! Maybe you’ll like them more than I do 🙂

Yikes.. I’m reading Falling Kingdoms right now so hopefully I like it more than you. I checked out Shatter Me a year ago and I just couldn’t get into it :/. I don’t know if it was bc of my age or if it was bc the book was truly boring so maybe I’ll try again.

I hope you’re enjoying Falling Kingdoms! Yeah, my main problem with Shatter Me was Juliette (and I think she’s even worse in Unravel Me). I want to finish the series though, so I might pick up Ignite Me

I haven’t read most of the books on your list, but I’ve heard VERY mixed things about all of them. My most disappointing eye candy book ever is probably Winterspell by Claire Legrand. It was one of my most anticipated books of 2014, pretty much entirely because it was a Nutcracker retelling, and I’ve loved The Nutcracker forever. On top of that, the cover and the premise are amazing, but the actual book was just really weird, creepy in a bad way, and generally underwhelming.

I have actually never heard of Winterspell! Nutcracker retellings are pretty rare haha. I looked it up, and the cover seems really gorgeous.
